Since beginning in San Antonio in 1949
I have lived a life uniquely mine:
I’ve been a daughter, a sister, a friend, a lover,
A wife, a mom and many others,
Each label tends to bleed into one another
I’ve backpacked through mountains
Set my spirit free,
Ran marathons
That tested the very soul of me
Looked into eyes
So magnificently blue –
A granddaughter opens up
The soul of you
Held the hand of death
When my Grandmother died
Still feel angry
When death comes as a total surprise
Found true friends
Who always keep me sane
And give me the courage
To live without shame
I’ve discovered the doorway
That leads into me –
I am a poet
